Besides being a day off from work and a chance to spend some valuable time with family and friends, Assumption Day is a very religious holiday. It’s a day when devout Roman Catholics go to a special Assumption Day mass or even attend an all-night vigil starting the night before.

Additionally, there are sometimes street processions and cultural and entertainment events put on for Assumption Day. The centre of holiday activity in French Guiana is in Cayenne, the capital and largest city, but there are some events held elsewhere as well.
