Turks and Caicos celebrates New Year’s Day with a public holiday every 1 January, as does most of the rest of the world. However, the celebrations really begin on New Year’s Eve and reach a high point with the turning of the clock from 11:59pm on 31 December to midnight on 1 January.

New Year’s Day is a time of resolutions and starting fresh for some, while for others it is spent recovering from a big, late night spent with friends and family.
Seasonal celebrations begin on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. There are also smaller events between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. The main events heat up on 31 December, however. There are bonfires, fireworks shows, live concerts, cultural and art exhibits, food stalls, and all manner of entertainment to be found.
Many also attend all-night special services at a local church. Church bells will ring at midnight when the new year arrives. New Year’s Eve is locally known as “Old Year’s Night”. It is also the time when a Maskanoo parade takes place and when Junkanoo music is heard in the streets from midnight until the dawning of New Year’s morning.
