In many countries worldwide including Suriname, 1 May is a public holiday called Labour Day.

In a few other countries it comes on a different day, and there’s a handful of nations that don’t celebrate at all. But Suriname is among the majority that do celebrate Labour day on 1 May.
There are parades, speeches, rallies, and sometimes protests in Suriname on Labour Day. However many people and families will also make the most of the day off for recreation.
Progress in workers’ rights and benefits is a major need in Suriname, and so it isn’t surprising that many value Labour Day both as a day off to spend with family and a time when pro-labour causes and complaints are aired.
