Sint Maarten, like the rest of the Christian world, celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ as a national public holiday on 25 December. The people of Sint Maarten celebrate Christmas with Christmas trees, lights, special church services, festive family meals, gift-giving, greeting cards, and trips to the beach. Many of the traditions they follow come to them immediately from the Netherlands.

Originally, Germanic peoples like the ancestors of the Dutch in the Netherlands celebrated pagan Winter Solstice holidays near the date of modern day Christmas. Later, these traditions were superseded and partially “Christianised” by the celebration of Christ’s birth. The date 25 December, however, was only established for Christmas by Pope Julius I in A.D. 350.
