Christmas in Saint Lucia offers a number of unique aspects. First of all, just being in the midst of sheer mountains, volcanic beaches, and babbling waterfalls creates a mood all its own. But then the celebrations begin with Saint Lucia’s Day in mid-December. This is a “festival of lights”, involving lantern-making contests and fireworks. It ends with setting up one’s Christmas lights, thus transitioning to the next-up holiday.

Anytime during December in Saint Lucia, you are likely to hear loud pops off and on as bamboo firecrackers explode. People stuff kerosene-soaked rags into a hollow bamboo shaft, light it on fire, run, and wait for the explosion.

Large family feasts are at the heart of Christmas celebrations in Saint Lucia. Roast meat, boiled plantain, yams, a flower-based beverage called “sorrel”, Christmas pudding, and black rum cake are among the most popular specialties.
