New Year’s Day is a time of resolutions and starting fresh for some, while for others it is spent recovering from a big, late night spent with friends and family.

In Saint Kitts and Nevis, the period between Christmas and New Year’s Day is beyond festive – it is a carnival. Since 1971, this has been Carnival season in Saint Kitts and has grown to the biggest annual festivity in the nation and one of the biggest in the whole Caribbean.

The Carnival is called “Sugar Mas” and begins on Christmas Day or thereabouts. It involves beauty and talent contests. The calypso contest is the central competition. The Carnival Parade takes place on 1 January, and the last day of the Carnival is on 2 January, which is also an official public holiday.

Also, after the final day of the Carnival ends on 2 January, the winners of the various competitions are announced. This is a much-anticipated announcement. While fireworks and other more usual New Year’s traditions exist in Saint Kitts and Nevis, the main attention is directed at the Carnival.
