The Assumption of Mary has been a church tradition since at least the 4th Century A.D., but it was not an officially recognised Catholic dogma until the 1950 declaration of Pope Pious XII.

The basis of this holiday is the belief that Saint Mary the mother of Jesus Christ did not see corruption in the grave after her death. Instead, it is taught by Roman Catholic dogma, she was assumed into heaven body and soul and all. The word “assumed” means the same thing as “ascended” except with the caveat that she rose not by her own power but because God caused her to rise.

Most devout Catholics attend special masses for Mary on Assumption Day. They also have special family gatherings and may go on outings to the beach or on short vacations.
