Public Holidays 2017
This page contains a calendar of all 2017 public holidays for Honduras. Please scroll down to view.
The majority of public holidays in Honduras are based on the country’s predominant Roman Catholic religion, as well as nation-wide political and cultural observances. Public holidays include New Year’s Day and the Christian Easter Holy Week beginning with Maundy Thursday, the first day of Lent. Christian Holy Week typically lasts for three of four days, concluding on Easter Sunday. Some employers allow Easter Monday as a paid holiday.
Employment contracts or union agreements are required of all workers in Honduras. Labor agreements generally outline provisions pertaining to wages, overtime compensation and entitlement to paid holidays and annual leave. Labor laws state that working hours cannot exceed eight hours per day during a daily work shift, for a total of 44 hours per week. Hours worked in excess of the maximum hours are usually compensated by additional wages or compensatory days off, according to terms stipulated in an employee’s labor contract. All workers are entitled to a weekly rest period which includes Sunday. An employer can require employees to work on Sundays only in circumstances in which emergency work schedules cannot be interrupted without causing harm to the business. If an employee works on Sunday, another day off is allowed during the following work week.
According to labor laws in Honduras, all workers are entitled to 10 days of paid annual leave after one year of continuous employment. Workers are granted 12 days of leave after two years of employment and 15 days after three years of employment. After four or more years of service, workers are granted 20 days of paid annual leave. Workers are entitled to use annual leave on an uninterrupted basis. Exceptions may be granted in cases of urgent business needs of a company. Employers are prohibited from offering financial compensation to workers in lieu of paid annual leave. If an employment contract or bargaining agreement is terminated for any reason, the employee is entitled to financial compensation for unused annual leave time.
