The Assumption of Mary has been a church tradition since at least the 4th Century A.D., but it was not an officially recognised Catholic dogma until the 1950 declaration of Pope Pious XII.
The main events on Assumption Day are special mass services in Catholic churches, religious processions, prayers and pilgrimages, and cultural festivals. People also get the day off work and spend time with family. Many families go on excursions together or have a special meal at home.
Public beaches are also popular destinations on Assumption Day. After all, this holiday comes mid-summer, and the weather is perfect for a dip in the sea!
