Labour Day 2025, 2026 and 2027 in Guatemala

Labour Day in Guatemala is celebrated every 1 May, as it is in much of the rest of the world. This is a holiday to celebrate the contributions of workers to the economy and society, and also a time to highlight where progress still needs to be made towards fair and safe working conditions.

Guatemala has made a lot of progress in regard to legislation guaranteeing the rights of employees. And this is celebrated by labour union demonstrators every first of May. But there is much work left to be done to adequately protect workers from exploitation and unsafe work environments.

For example, in rural regions of Guatemala, most people are engaged in farming and ranching activities, if employed at all. But these sectors are not much protected by the nation’s labour laws, and there is a predominance of “informal employment” that makes it hard to enforce any laws that do currently exist.

Despite these continuing problems, people who have a job are generally thankful. And they are willing to celebrate Labour Day in a positive way with family and friends.
