New Year’s Day is a time of resolutions and starting fresh for some, while for others it is spent recovering from a big, late night spent with friends and family.
Aside from family gatherings and feasts, midnight watches and toasts, and other traditions common to other parts of the world, there are also some unique events around New Year’s Day in The Falkland Islands.
On New Year’s Day, there is an annual raft race in the city of Stanley. People build their rafts in preparation for the event, and you will see a great variety of construction styles. They then race and navigate a course, using the event to raise money for charity. Everyone stops for food and drink at the end of the course.
In late December, not far from New Year’s Eve, The ram and fleece show takes place on the less-populated West Falkland Island in Fox Bay. There is an outdoor barbecue, and there are prizes given out by the governor of the islands.
