This Christian festivity commemorates the birth of Jesus, and is part of a 22-28 day season in the Christian calendar known as Advent.

It may seem like Christmas would be a lonely time of year in a rather isolated place like the Falkland Islands, where there are only 3,000 residents but 50 times that number of sheep! But it is actually a very happy and festive time where family and community togetherness reigns supreme.

Being located south of the Equator, 25 December comes in the summertime on the Falkland Islands. Due to a scarcity of trees on the islands, most Christmas trees here are artificial ones.

There is a tradition in the Falkland Islands of gathering to sing Christmas songs below the Whalebone Arch near the Christchurch Cathedral in Stanley. The Cathedral then offers a Christmas morning service. There is also a Christmas pantomime each year in Stanley, and presents are flown out of the city to the countryside, called “The Camp”, to help farm kids have a merrier Christmas.
