Ecuador celebrates all of Holy Week, from Palm Sunday when Jesus entered Jerusalem to Easter Sunday when He rose from the grave, in a manner very religious and devoid of the commercialisation seen in other countries. Good Friday is a public holiday each year and a key day for Easter-related events.

In some ways, Good Friday is the key day of Holy Week in Ecuador. For it’s then that many towns hold colourful parades where Jesus’ death is re-enacted. Friday is also the day of Holy Week on which the most “Franesca”, a 12-grain soup representing the 12 disciples, is eaten.
On Holy Saturday, parties basically break out in the streets. And church services begin. When Easter Sunday finally comes, people just relax and recover.
