Christmas in Curaçao is celebrated with a public holiday every 25 December, as it is in a majority of countries around the world. This Christian festivity commemorates the birth of Jesus, and is part of a 22-28 day season in the Christian calendar known as Advent.

In Curaçao, Christmas comes twice in a manner of speaking. First, “Sinterklass” shows up in early December in a street-parade and swaps out horse snacks for candy and sweets in children’s shoes. The children leave carrots or hay in their footwear at night to feed Santa’s horses only to wake up and find goodies in its place!

As Christmas Day approaches, there are craft fairs, Christmas markets, and public concerts galore. But the real distinctives of Christmas in Curaçao are all about the food.

At resorts and hotels, you would likely get roast turkey for Christmas dinner. But locals indulge in hallacas, a kind of tamale wrapped up in plantain leaves and filled with all kinds of spiced meats and other delicious ingredients. Pan de jamon, “ham bread”, is aptly named. It is a sweet kind of bread filled with ham, olives, raisins, and other goodies. Black rum cake is also indulged in as is a special creamy blend of local eggnog.
