Ascension Day is a holiday in Bonaire to commemorate Jesus Christ’s ascension to heaven as recorded in the Bible. It is observed on the fortieth day of Easter – 39 days after Easter Sunday – and always fall on a Thursday.

Bonaire celebrates a number of holidays that are all a part of the greater Easter season. These include Good Friday, marking the death of Christ on the cross, Easter, when He rose from the grave, Ascension Day, when he ascended to the Father, and Pentecost, when He sent the Holy Spirit to empower the church for ministry.
Many in Bonaire will attend church or mass on Ascension Thursday or the following Sunday. They will spend some time feasting and fellowshipping with family and friends. They may also get out to the local beach to swim and catch some rays or go for a nature hike or bike trip.
