The Plurinational State of Bolivia is a country located in West-Central South America. Bolivia currently celebrates 10 national holidays and nine national regional holidays each year. Bolivia is one of the few countries in the world to dedicate specific national holidays to each of its regions.

Many of the holidays that are celebrated in Bolivia are based on the Christian faith. Some of these holidays are celebrated over multiple days, and many of these events occur at different times each year because actual dates are based on the lunar cycle. The government of Bolivia releases a list of official holidays at the end of each year for the following year.

Public holidays in Bolivia are regulated by Decreto Supremo #27185 del 22 de Septiembre 2003. This Decree provides for 10 national holidays and one national holiday for each of the nine departments (regions) in the country. Article 67 of this decree further states that each branch of government, federal, department, or local have the authority to declare up to three additional one-time non-working holidays each year.

As of 2016, the Bolivian government made it official that any national holiday falling on a Sunday will be celebrated on the following Monday.

Under the Labor Laws of Bolivia, all workers who are under a contract for employment and have worked at least 90 days are entitled to receive a paid day off for all national holidays. Workers who are temp workers or have not passed their 90 day initiation period do not qualify for holiday pay.

Employers throughout the rest of the country are not required to recognise these holidays.

Cultural Celebrations

Bolivia has a large population of indigenous people that still actively practice their native faith. These culturally based holidays are acknowledged by the Bolivian government but they are not recognised as official holidays. Employers are not required to provide days off with pay for these celebrations.
