Every 1 May is Labour Day in Anguilla. No other day of the year is dedicated to honouring the efforts and achievements of workers of all stripes like Labour Day is.

Most adults are off work for at least one day, and most kids are out of school. That means that everyone has the chance to make a day of it! The sandy beach shores will be crowded to the hilt, city entertainment centres filled up, and shopping centres busy. Many private parties will be going on as well, and families may gather for a big meal at home or go out to a restaurant together.
The origin of the holiday is the 4 May 1886 Haymarket Massacre during a labour protest in Chicago, USA. As the world industrialised in the mid to late 1800’s, the dismal working conditions in many factories led to a protest movement.
The Haymarket Massacre became a key moment in the movement, leading to the establishment of Labour Day, then called “International Workers Day”, to demand things like an 8-hour work day, safer working conditions, and increased pay.
