Parades, fireworks, barbecues, picnics, excursions to Saint Barthélemy’s popular beaches, and scenic walks through some of the island’s most breathtaking terrain are all common activities for National Day. Politicians are apt to give speeches on this day, which many may listen to on TV or radio.

Saint Barthélemy has a complex and storied history, but the people are proud members of the French community.

The Arawak called the island Ouanalao and held out against European settlement until the French came in 1648. France sold Saint Barthélemy to Sweden in 1784 and then repurchased it from them in 1878.
